Ingredients

  • 10 apples (McIntosh, Cortland, or Gala)

  • 45 mL (3 tbsp) maple syrup

  • 7.5 mL (½ tbsp) ground cinnamon

  • 1 mL (¼ tsp) ground ginger

  • 1 mL (¼ tsp) ground nutmeg

Preparation

  1. Wash, core, and dice the apples. Keep the skin on.
  2. In a large saucepan, add the diced apples, maple syrup, cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg.
  3. Stir well, then bring to a boil over medium-high heat.
  4. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apples are very tender.
  5. Remove from heat. Using a hand blender, purée until smooth.
  6. Let cool slightly before serving or jarring.

Notes

Keeps for 5 days in the refrigerator in an airtight container, or 3 months in the freezer.

 

"Apple Butter" Variation: For an ultra-creamy, velvety finish, stir in 15 to 30 mL (1 to 2 tbsp) of melted butter at the very end, right after puréeing the apples.

Spice Mix: You can replace the cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg with 15 mL (1 tbsp) of pumpkin pie spice or allspice mix.
