Homemade Spice Mix

Make your own spice mixes! Homemade spice blends allow us to have control over the amounts used according to our preferences. Here are some ideas for blends that you can make at home and use in many recipes. When it comes to the amount of spices to use in a recipe, you can go by taste. Generally, 1 tablespoon is enough to season a recipe for 4 servings.

Ingredients

Mediterranean Spice Mix:

  • 10 mL (2 teaspoons) dried savory
  • 10 mL (2 teaspoons) dried thyme
  • 10 mL (2 teaspoons) onion powder
  • 10 mL (2 teaspoons) dried marjoram
  • 5 mL (1 teaspoon) dried sage
  • 5 mL (1 teaspoon) dried rosemary
  • 5 mL (1 teaspoon) dried oregano

Italian Spice Mix:

  • 15 mL (1 tablespoon) dried oregano
  • 10 mL (2 teaspoons) dried marjoram
  • 10 mL (2 teaspoons) dried thyme
  • 10 mL (2 teaspoons) dried rosemary
  • 5 mL (1 teaspoon) dried basil
  • 5 mL (1 teaspoon) dried savory
  • 2 mL (½ teaspoon) ground sage

Mexican Spice Mix:

  • 22 ml (1 ½ tablespoon) ground chili
  • 10 mL (2 teaspoons) ground paprika
  • 10 mL (2 teaspoons) dried oregano
  • 5 mL (1 teaspoon) ground cumin
  • 5 mL (1 teaspoon) onion powder
  • 5 mL (1 teaspoon) garlic powder
  • 2 mL (½ teaspoon) crushed chili flakes (optional)

Indian spice mix: 

  • 15 mL (1 tablespoon.) cumin 
  • 10 mL (2 teaspoon) dried coriander 
  • 10 mL (2 teaspoons) ground cardamom
  • 7.5 mL (1 ½ teaspoons) cinnamon
  • 5 mL (1 teaspoon) pepper
  • 2 mL (½ teaspoon) ground ginger
  • 2.5 mL (1/2 teaspoon) nutmeg 
  • 1 mL (¼ teaspoon) ground cloves

Preparation

  1. In an airtight container, mix all ingredients.
  2. Store in a cool, dry place.

Mediterranean

  • Seasoning for chicken, roasted vegetables and potatoes 
  • Croutons
  • Sauces and marinades 
  • Herb salad dressing 
  • Fish wrappers

 

Italian

  • Seasoning for tomato-based dishes (i.e. pasta, pizza), vegetables, salads, meats and potatoes
  • Tomato sauces and marinades

 

Mexican 

  •  Seasoning for Mexican recipes (e.g. tacos, fajitas, quesadillas, enchiladas, chili)
  • Ground meat and chicken 
  • Marinades

 

Indian

  • Seasoning for Mexican recipes (i.e. tacos, fajitas, quesadillas, enchiladas, chili)
  • Ground meat and chicken
