Ode to Tofu

Of course, tofu by itself is boring!

If I say tofu, what do you think of? It’s not good, but it’s not bad… In reality, it doesn’t taste anything.

I feel you.

Indeed, a white block in a plastic packaging with an unidentified liquid isn’t really attractive. When you cut a slice of tofu, wheather you eat it raw or cooked, you still discover that above all that, it doesn’t taste like anything.

Tofu alone is a blank canvas.

You wouldn’t hang a blank canvas in your living room, especially if your walls are also white…

Go ahead and paint that canvas! Add colour and texture to it! It’s the same with tofu.

And by the way, do you eat beef, pork or chicken without even preparing them, seasoning them or cooking them? Nope.

Therefore, before tofu ends up in our plate, we have to make sure to give it an appealing shape, colour and flavour.

Here are some ideas to highlight your tofu!

One block of tofu; diverse shapes :

  • Cubes
  • Sticks
  • Rectangles or even hearts if you feel like it!

One block of tofu; a large palette of colours and flavours :

  • Spices (cumin, chili, curry…)
  • Fresh herbs (basil, thyme, sage…)
  • Sauces (soy, Worcestershire, wine vinegar, sherry vinegar, apple cider vinegar, rice vinegar…)
  • Stocks (vegetable, chicken, beef, miso…)

Cooking - Reveal flavours and textures :

  • Oven baked
  • Sauteed
  • Boiled...
